Moolchand Paranthewaala
When Shashank (of FED) wrote of his recent detour to the reclusive paranthe-waala under the Moolchand flyover, the allure was hard to resist. Like any foodie worth his hunger, we skipped today’s lunch and headed to the Moolchand Metro Station to (re-)sample another of Dilli’s street food stars.
Unlike their Punjabi counterparts, the Moolchand (for lack of an official name) paranthas are more fried than seka hua. They’re served with a generous sprinkling of masala and a fistful of moist chillies. There’s a choice of raita or butter on the side for the more indulgent. They have a variety of stuffings on offer but gobi and pyaaz were clear standouts amongst those sampled by us. Their egg paranthas are the hottest seller though. Moderately cheap at 18-20 rupees apiece.
Our verdict? Much the same as Shashank’s. They’re good, but not yet the stuff of legends. The subtle yet chatpata masala sprinkling is their unique edge, and they’re pretty guarded about its secret. (When asked “Yeh kaun sa masala hai?”, all we managed to get was “Yeh masala hai.”)
I should mention though that 3pm on a hot Delhi summer afternoon is far from the ideal setting for consuming such paranthas. The Thums Up did help, but I suspect garam chai on a chilly night would be a far more satisfying accompaniment. Definitely returning to this place during the cooler months, closer to midnight and a few drinks down.
